Quick answer: Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) in Malaysia includes a static IP address, and more fixed IP addresses can be requested. How many you need depends on what must be reachable from outside your office: VPN gateways, remote access, servers, CCTV recorders and systems that partners allowlist by IP. List those services first, add room for a backup line and growth, and ask each carrier how many addresses are included and what extra ones involve before you sign.
A static (fixed) IP address does not change. Business broadband often uses a dynamic address that can change without notice, which breaks anything that depends on a known address. That is one of the reasons businesses move to DIA. New to DIA? Read what is Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) or compare DIA vs business broadband.
What businesses use static IPs for
| Use | Why a fixed address matters |
|---|---|
| Site-to-site VPN to head office or branches | The other end needs a known address to connect to |
| Remote access for staff or IT support | Firewalls only allow logins from approved addresses |
| Partner, bank or supplier allowlists | Many systems accept traffic only from listed IPs |
| Servers you host on site | Web, mail or application servers need a stable address |
| CCTV recorders and building systems | Remote viewing and monitoring need a fixed target |
| VoIP and video systems | Some phone and conferencing systems are set up per IP |
How to work out how many static IPs you need
- List every service that must be reachable from outside. Count each one that needs its own public address.
- Check what can share an address. Your IT team or firewall partner can often publish several services behind one address. Ask them before requesting more.
- Plan for a backup line. If you add business broadband failover or a second DIA line from a different carrier, decide how your VPNs and allowlists will handle a second set of addresses.
- Leave room to grow. New sites, new systems or a second office often need extra addresses later. Ask how easy it is to add more during the contract.
What to ask the carrier before you sign
- How many static IPs are included with the line, and how are more requested?
- Is there any charge for additional addresses?
- Is IPv6 available alongside IPv4?
- Can reverse DNS be set for our addresses (useful if you run a mail server)?
- If we move office or change carrier later, can the addresses be kept?
These answers belong in your quote and service order, not in a phone call. For the wider list of contract checks, see our DIA contract renewal checklist and DIA SLAs explained.
Static IPs when you change carrier or move
If you change carrier or relocate, ask early whether your addresses can be kept. If they cannot, list every system that uses them, from VPNs and firewall rules to partner allowlists, and schedule the updates for cut-over day. Plan this in the same project as the installation; our DIA installation timeline checklist includes confirming static IPs and routing before handover. Moving premises? Frequently asked questions
Does DIA come with a static IP in Malaysia?
Yes. DIA includes a static IP address, and more fixed IP addresses can be requested.
Why would my business need more than one static IP?
If several services must be reachable from outside, such as a VPN gateway, a hosted server and a CCTV recorder, and they cannot share one address, each may need its own.
Does business broadband include a static IP?
Often not. Business broadband commonly uses a dynamic address, and a static IP may cost extra. DIA includes one.
Is IPv6 available with DIA?
DIA services are IPv6 ready. Ask the carrier to confirm IPv6 for your line in the quote.
Can I keep my IP addresses if I change carrier?
They may change. Ask both carriers early and plan updates to VPNs, firewall rules and allowlists before cut-over.
