Quick answer: If you are moving office in Malaysia, start planning your business internet 3 to 4 months before the move date. Check fibre availability at the new address with several carriers first, then decide whether to relocate your current DIA, leased line or Metro-E service or order a new one. A building already on a carrier’s network typically takes about 4 to 6 weeks from order to live; where new fibre must be laid, plan on 8 to 16 weeks, sometimes longer in industrial areas.

Internet is usually the last thing on the moving checklist and the first thing staff notice on day one. A new office with no working line means no email, no online applications, no calls and no access to head office systems. The fix is simple: treat the line as a project with its own timeline, not a task for move week. New to DIA? Read what is Dedicated Internet Access (DIA).

Office move timeline for your internet line

Before move date What to do
4 to 3 months Confirm the new address and floor. Ask carriers to check fibre readiness at the building. Find your current contract end date and notice terms.
3 to 2 months Decide: relocate the existing service or order a new line. Place the order. Book survey access with the new building’s management.
2 to 1 month Survey and any fibre work. Prepare rack, power and cable paths in the new comms room.
Last 2 weeks Router (CPE) install, activation and testing. Confirm bandwidth, static IPs, routing and failover before staff move in.
After the move Keep the old line until the new one is proven, then close it according to your contract.

For the detailed steps between order and go-live, use our DIA installation timeline checklist.

Step 1: Check fibre readiness at the new address first

Availability and lead time depend on whether the new building is already on a carrier’s fibre network. Do this check before you sign the lease if you can. A building that is on-net for several carriers gives you choice and a shorter timeline. One that needs new fibre can add weeks, and there may be a one-time fibre pull cost.

Step 2: Relocate the existing service or order a new one?

Ask your current carrier whether your service can move to the new address, how long it takes and what it costs. Then compare that with a fresh order. A move is often a natural point to review the whole set-up:

  • Is the bandwidth still right? A new office may mean more staff, more video meetings or CCTV. See our DIA bandwidth sizing guide.
  • Does the contract term still fit? Check your end date and whether moving changes it. Our DIA contract renewal checklist lists what to review.
  • Is the current carrier on-net at the new building? If not, another carrier may be faster to deliver.

Step 3: Plan static IPs, VPNs and allowlists

If your systems rely on fixed IP addresses, ask early whether they can move with the service. If they cannot, list everything that uses them: VPNs to head office or branches, firewall rules, remote access, and allowlists held by banks, suppliers or partners. Schedule those changes for cut-over day so nothing breaks quietly. See our guide to static IP addresses with DIA.

Step 4: Don’t move without a backup

The first weeks in a new building are when surprises happen. A common set-up is DIA with business broadband failover on the same router, or two DIA lines from different carriers for the highest resilience. If uptime matters, plan the backup path in the same project, not after go-live. Read how to achieve near-zero internet downtime.

Step 5: Don’t forget the links between sites

If the old and new offices will run side by side for a while, or you have branches, review your Metro-E or leased line links at the same time. A move is a good moment to check that inter-site links and internet access are designed together.

  • Planned move date
  • Current carrier, bandwidth and contract end date

Frequently asked questions

How early should I arrange internet for a new office in Malaysia?

About 3 to 4 months before the move. Installation typically takes about 4 to 6 weeks in a building already on the carrier’s network and 8 to 16 weeks where new fibre is needed.

Can I move my DIA line to a new office?

Often, if the carrier serves the new building. Ask your carrier about timing and any charges, and compare it with a new order before you decide.

Will my static IP addresses change when I move?

They may. Ask your carrier early, and list every system that uses your current IPs so they can be updated on cut-over day.

Is there a setup fee for a new line at the new office?

There may be a one-time setup fee, and a fibre pull cost if the building is not yet on the carrier’s network.

Should I keep the old line until the move is finished?

Yes, where you can. Keep the old service running until the new line is installed, tested and carrying traffic, then close it according to your contract.
